Stourbridge Swimming Club

Emergency Procedures

All teaching / coaching staff must make themselves aware of the emergency procedures at all pools and liaise closely with the pool staff at all times. In the event of an emergency when no formal procedure exists, then the following are basic guidelines to correct action. All teaching / coaching staff should make themselves aware of emergency exits, their position and where they lead to.

Fire

The fire alarm should be activated if not already active. All swimmers should exit the pool by the nearest emergency exit. No swimmers should be allowed back into the changing rooms. Try to keep the swimmers as warm as possible. Keep all swimmers together as a group and have a roll call to ensure that all swimmers are safe. Follow the instructions from the Fire Service and pool staff.

Power Failure

All swimmers should exit the pool and be kept in a safe area with adequate natural light. If it is safe to do so, swimmers should be escorted to their appropriate changing rooms if there are helpers or parents available to supervise. Parents should be contacted and all swimmers kept together until their parents collect them. A roll call should be taken and swimmers supervised at all times by at least two adults.

Accident

In the event of an accident, the swimmer or person who has the medical emergency should be attended to immediately. Other swimmers should be instructed to exit the pool and the pool helper or teacher should instruct the swimmers to return to the changing rooms and keep warm until the emergency has been resolved. The pool helper and a responsible adult should supervise the swimmers at all times.

All persons in charge of club sessions must be aware of the facilities NOP and EAP as above. These should be strictly followed in case of an emergency.

The important action points are:

Raise the alarm Call the emergency services (if necessary) Do not move someone with major injuries, wait for specialist help Ensure the rest of the group is properly supervised Contact the injured person’s parent or carer Complete the club’s accident / incident record log Inform insurer
