Round one of the Nuneaton Junior Diddy League Division 3 and Stourbridge B had a tough draw against amongst others, Oldbury and Worcester and to make matters worse, a number of regular swimmers were unavailable due to school PGL activities. Such is the depth of swimmers at the club now, we were able to give some of our younger swimmers the opportunity to compete and as such were able to field a full squad.
Jessica, Jarred, Charis and Lewis were first to swim, and 2nd places from Jarred and Charis gave us some good points on the board. Hannah and Ryan put in good times in the backstroke taking 2nd and 3rd and then a close finish saw Thomas take 2nd place in his breaststroke event.
We had to wait till event 15 before we got our first win courtesy of Megan who swam a stunning two lengths to take the butterfly event by just 0.3 secs. Well done Meg. This was followed by Grace taking a superb second place in a photo finish in the 11 yrs backstroke. Time for the 12 year olds again and this time it was Becky and Jacob who won their breaststroke events showing good technique to come home in front in two very close races.
At the half way stage the points were;
Worcester 122
Oldbury 121
Warley 92
Stourbridge 91
Broadway 75
Perry Beaches 48
A good performance by Lewis was rewarded with 2nd place in the one length butterfly. Well done Lewis. Beth and Adam followed with two 2nd places in the freestyle event. Charis made it two 2nd places from two events with a good swim in the 9 yrs freestyle followed by our 12 year olds taking two 2nd places in the boys and girls freestyle relays. Robert showed good strength with 1st place in his breaststroke event by just over a second. Well done Robert. Grace also made it two races and two 2nd places, only missing out on the win in her freestyle event by just 0.2sec!! Hannah, Becky, Megan and Beth finished 1st in the medley relay and Ryan swam a superb backstroke leg to help the boys take 2nd in their medley relay. At the end of the gala the points were;
Oldbury 222
Worcester 214
Warley 174
Stourbridge 172
Broadway 135
Perry Beaches 83
Well done to all the swimmers, particularly those who swam for the team for the first time. Unfortunately we incurred six disqualifications during the gala and only five wins. With another tough draw in the next round it is important that we score points in every event, so there is lots to work on in training before the next round.
Every swimmer put in 100% effort so well done everyone and see you for Round 2.
