WORCESTER WINTER LEAGUE

19 FEBRUARY 2011 – ROUND 2

This gala sees us taking a trip to Halesowen for round 2. This was a tough draw for our B Team but we were definitely up for the challenge.

Our first 10 races saw 2 great 3rd places come in from Ed on the 13s back and Becky on the Open fly. So with a quarter of the gala already gone, we were in 5th place but had fought really hard for each one of our 19 points. Again the next 10 races saw another 2 hard fought 3rd places from Tom on the Open back and Alex on the 13s breast. Our one and only win of the night came in race 20 from Sam on the 13s breaststroke. It was so close at the finish but not a doubt in my mind – fantastic swim Sam and very well deserved maximum points. So after 20 races we were still in 5th position.

Race 21, the Open Medley Relay, was a real nail biter. With just 0.11 of a second between us and Halesowen B, our Open swimmers just touched them out. A great race to watch that certainly had us all on our feet shouting and screaming. Race 27 gave us a great lift. Sophie took to the water for the Open Free. Some real tough opposition here but Sophie was not daunted. She took off like a rocket and came in 2nd place – a fantastic swim Sophie – well done. ¾ of the gala gone and we are now firmly in 5th place but still fighting for every point.

The final 10 races got off to a great start with a 3rd place from Katie on the 15s back – poetry in motion as ever Katie, well done. We had 2 strong relays to finish with race 39 seeing a 3rd place from our 13s freestyle relay team and a repeat performance from our Open freestyle relay team.

So the final scores were:

Halesowen A 171 points

Redditch 156 points

Halesowen B 100 points

Droitwich 87 points

Stourbridge B 80 points

I couldn’t have asked any more from my swimmers, every one gave everything they had.

My top scoring team of the night were my Open swimmers, well done to you all, a fab job. Our breaststroke swimmers were the strongest stroke on the night and in a very close run contest, the girls beat the boys by just one point – Ohhhhhhhhhh so close!!

Swimmer of the night was a relatively easy call for me, with just one winner, it has to be Sam Matthews. That swim tonight was absolutely amazing Sam, well done.

Thanks again to all my helpers; I really couldn’t do this without you.
